Legality of radar jammers

Radar jammers are illegal pretty much all over the world. There are some countries, where you can use them, but
you will have to find yourself, which countries those are. In the United States radar jammers are illegal to use in
all states. This is regulated by the Federal Law dealing with radio frequencies and FCC (Federal Communications Commission). Although some makers claim it is legal, I would be hesitant to use it, as if you are caught, you might be facing even a jail sentence. In many countries, a high fine is attached to a "guilty" verdict. In some countries fines can be as high as $10,000.

The reasons the radar jammers are such a problem is that they not only interfere with a speed camera that you are trying to block from locking your speed, but they also interfere with tons of other signals. Regulations of FCC are clear, and anything that interferes with the regulated radio frequencies (I believe, today, that means all frequencies), will be tracked down and become a subject to a legal proceeding.

I personally would not test my luck. FCC is a powerful organization.

Radar Jammers

How do they work?
There are two different types of radar jammers passive and active.

Passive radar jammers

To most people who understand the radio and other related technology, the use of passive radars remains a mystery. The manufacturers of passive radar jammers claim that the equipment receives an incoming signal that is sent by the police detection radar. Once the signal is received, the equipment should scramble it and then send this scrambled signal back to the police detection device. It sounds nice, however, so far not many (if any) independent tests have been supplied to the public to prove that this technology actually works. The problem that the experts point out is that it is virtually impossible for a small antenna to send out a signal that would reach the police radar gun with the scrambled data. In other words, what they are suggesting is that those jammers cannot work; hence your money spent on those products such as Rocky Mountain Radar or Phantom is wasted.

Active radar jammers

Unlike their passive brother products, active radar jammers have not been proven to be a fraud (not yet), which is probably why they are illegal and hard to get (if not impossible). The reason they seem to work is that the signal they are sending out is very strong and this signal is supposed to cancel out the reflections of the car that are being read by the police detection device. However, there are several limitations to their use as they only work in one direction (usually front of the car), they do not cover all the frequencies that the police radars might be scanning (they only work for K and X bands), they do not perform well on shorter distances, and supposedly there is also a problem with them interfering with other devices (such as radars in other cars, etc.). Last, but not the least, they are anything but cheap and the price range from some $449 to $749.
