The Law In The US

Commercial Vehicles

As of 2009, most states in the United States tolerate the use of a speed camera detector. There are, however,
 some regulations that you might want to know about. If you are driving a commercial vehicle over 10,000 pounds,
 than I strongly advice you to stay away from speed camera detectors. By Federal Law, the use of a speed camera 
 detector is prohibited in "commercial motorized vehicles." Now, I have gone over the law, and it is not clear to me 
 whether the detectors are illegal to use in all commercial vehicles or only in those over 10,000 pounds. There is 
 nothing in the law about 10,000 pounds. Hence, I am assuming, based on other people research, that somewhere 
 there is a description of  what is considered a "commercial vehicle," which states clearly that those are vehicles
 over 10,000 pounds. I will do some more research into it and update the info once that issue is clarified, as the
 implications could be pretty serious if the phrase "commercial vehicles" is described in another way.

Military Bases

For military personnel or for civilians entering the US military bases, please, be advice that the use of speed 
 camera detectors is illegal to use in all US military bases.

Privately Owned Vehicles

Now, if you are driving a privately own vehicle, then the following laws apply to you.
 If you live in Virginia, then forget it! It is illegal to not only use the speed camera detector, but also to own it. 
 Hence, if you are pulled over and you have an anti-radar in your car, you will get into troubles.
 In District of Columbia, it is also illegal to use radar detectors. However, it is not considered illegal to own it.
 If you live in Minnesota, it is not illegal to own and use speed camera detectors; however, it is illegal to have
 anything attached to your windshield. That means, if you want to have a fuzz buster in your car in Minnesota,
 make sure it is not hanging from your windshield. Now, I have a good reason to believe that the same law is 
 applied in the states of California and New York.

In all other states you should be o.k. for now. While it is unlikely speed camera detectors will be banned, 
 there is a great possibility that the government could limit the scope of such devices, or create a standard for
 manufacturers. The devices are currently in a gray area and are considered legal to own and operate. 
 The legality of the devices could change at any moment.
